Welcome to the Flash Course “From Pedagogical Innovation to Research: An Introduction to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)”! This training session invites to explore how to transform pedagogical innovation experiences into research opportunities focused on teaching and learning. Through a practical approach, the session will explore the process from identifying a teaching practice problem to formulating a research question, selecting the necessary evidence and choosing an appropriate study design. It also aims to encourage reflection on the contribution of pedagogical research and innovation beyond the context in which it is conducted, promoting the generation of knowledge that can inform the improvement of teaching and learning practices and support the dissemination of findings through academic publications. Participation is free of charge, but registration is mandatory.

Content

  • The fundamental principles of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and its relevance to research on teaching and learning in higher education.

  • Transforming teaching practice challenges and experiences into opportunities for educational research.

  • Formulating research questions based on challenges and experiences of pedagogical innovation.

  • Identifying and selecting the necessary evidence and choosing a study design suited to the research objectives.

  • The contribution of educational research to improving teaching and learning practices and generating knowledge that can be transferred to other educational contexts.

  • Disseminating educational research findings through academic publications.

Target Audience

Higher education teaching staff interested in transforming experiences of pedagogical innovation into research opportunities focused on teaching and learning, deepening their understanding of SoTL and developing educational research skills, as well as education and pedagogical innovation professionals and students interested in producing and disseminating scientific knowledge in this field.

Motivation

Pedagogical innovation can serve as a starting point for systematic research into teaching and learning, helping to improve understanding of the impact of teaching practices and providing an evidence-based foundation for their improvement. This course offers an opportunity to explore the principles of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and understand the process of moving from identifying a teaching practice challenge to formulating a research question, selecting relevant evidence and defining an appropriate study design. The aim is to encourage a reflective and evidence-informed approach to pedagogical innovation, promoting the generation of knowledge that extends beyond the context in which it is developed and contributes to improving educational practices and disseminating findings through academic publications.
