Not Everything Is Generative AI: An Introduction to Machine Learning

Welcome to the Flash Seminar “Not Everything Is Generative AI: An Introduction to Machine Learning.” In this introductory and hands-on session, we will demystify the world of artificial intelligence beyond generative models and explore the fundamentals of machine learning (ML) as a technology already shaping multiple fields, including higher education. The seminar will take place in person at the Pedagogical Innovation Center of the Polytechnic of Porto and will include demonstrations, small practical exercises, and real-world examples. Participation is free but requires mandatory registration.

This session includes Portuguese Sign Language (LGP) interpretation.

Content

• What machine learning is and how it differs from generative AI
• The main types of ML algorithms and what they do
• Examples of ML applications in education, research, and real-world problem solving
• Accessible tools to start exploring ML without advanced programming skills
• Ethical considerations and limitations to keep in mind when using ML in educational contexts

Target Audience

Higher education teachers, students, researchers, and anyone interested in emerging technologies who wants to understand the fundamental principles of machine learning and explore responsible and creative ways to integrate AI into teaching and learning.

Motivation

Understanding machine learning is essential to navigating today’s digital ecosystem with critical awareness. This seminar offers a clear and accessible introduction to how algorithms learn from data, helping educators, students, and curious participants grasp the potential and limitations of this technology to innovate teaching and support research.
